Elon’s Landfill on the Lawn Disrupted by Windy Weather

By Carolyn VanBrocklin

It would have been the one time Elon’s landscape was not in its usual pristine condition. Students involved in Elon’s Earth Week activities had planned a Landfill on the Lawn, which would involve spreading garbage across the lawn by the Moseley Center.

Bagged trash sits on the lawn as part of the Landfill on the Lawn. The windy weather prevented the event from taking place.

“What we would be doing, if it wasn’t so windy, is we would spread the garbage out on the tarps and then put on the Hazmat suits and sift through the garbage to find all the recyclable stuff,” Griffin Sager-Gellerman, a member of the Green Team, said.

The Green Team and the Sierra Club with help from other student participants put on this event to demonstrate to students that, despite Elon’s dedication to sustainability, items that could be recycled are still trashed.

The heavy winds put a temporary halt to this event, since trash would have been scattered across the university.  Later, when the winds had died down, the trash bags were opened and students hunted for recycleables.

  1. I understand what you were trying to do with the lead, but it’s not quite where it needs to be. Take another look and write it with more clarity and proper grammar or possible try for another angle. I think you could shape it up better with just a few minutes of your attention.
