Barbara Bancroft, RN, Discusses Options For a Healthy Lifestyle

By Carolyn VanBrocklin

Last night at 7:30 p.m. at Elon University, Barbara Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP and Executive Director and President of CPP Associates, Inc. spoke about health matters “from the a’s to the zzz’s.”healthtips

Bancroft outlined a list of her ten best tips to keep a person healthy. In today’s world, she said that the biggest health concerns facing Americans are heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Bancroft’s list of health tips aimed to start listeners on a path to preventing these diseases.

Bancroft emphasized the importance of exercise to keep your mind in shape. She said that typically it is important to get at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week. “Realistically that’s almost impossible for most of us,” Bancroft said.

Instead, Bancroft recommended getting any kind of physical activity possible throughout the day, or trying to start off the day with a little bit of cardio activity. Exercise reduces the risk of hormone-related cancers and builds neurons which help with memory.

Bancroft also advised listeners to help with their memory by associating smell, rather than sight, with things they are trying to memorize. Particularly when studying for a test, Bancroft suggested chewing strong smelling gum while studying, and then chewing another piece of the same kind of gum while taking a test.

Number two on Bancroft’s list of important health tips was an emphasis on eating properly. Some health concerns that come from not having a healthy diet include inflammation and oxidation.

Bancroft emphasized that following a Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest options. This includes eating a lot of fish, particularly salmon, mackerel or tuna, because of the omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish.

“Chow down on anything that has the last name ‘berry,’” Bancroft said. “Anything with the last name berry is fabulous for you.” Bancroft said that berries can be tossed on a handful of cereal to start your day.

Other beneficial foods that Bancroft said should be a big part of one’s diet include eggs, fresh fruits and veggies, a little bit of olive oil, nuts and beans.

Bancroft’s other health items included getting plenty of rest and other medical checkups to ensure that you are in optimal health. She said overall it is important to reduce stress and make sure that you have a happy and positive outlook on life. All together, Bancroft’s list of health tips was aimed at giving college students guidelines to start living a healthy life.
